Managing constraints for software projects

The success of any project is factor of cost, schedule, quality, and functionalities. Time to market (TTM) is the length of time it takes from a product being conceived until its being available for sale. It is an important measure in many industries such as web application products, automobiles, and almost every other industry. The shorter it is, the better it works for the organization. However, shortening the TTM might have impact on the other attributes of the product.

The goal of any product is to be cheaper, better, and faster. However, all three of them are conflicting. If you try to overwork on one factor the other two gets affected. It is very important to balance those factors to get the optimum product at the right time.

Cost: There is no point in getting the superior quality products very quickly to market by deploying all the resources by shooting its cost. It may not commercially succeed. The cost input comes from the MRD Project Success Cost Quality Functionality Schedule

Schedule: It is always better to be one of the first few companies to come up with innovative solutions. If one waits to get the product to be perfect and bugs free, the product is probably too late to the market and then it will be tough to cut through the competition

Quality: An unacceptable quality product is as good as being not there. Rework costs more money than the product itself at times. It is wastage of resources, infrastructure, time and effort of the entire organization. No product has been successful which of inferior quality. But, at the same time how much quality should be dependent on PRD and specifications.

Functionality: The purpose of the product is to solve or reduce a problem. It is designed and developed to perform some functions. A product with best quality and cheaper price tag is useless if it fails in its functionality. A product is primarily designed to perform these functionalities with the optimization of the above three factors
